FEBRUARY PGK MEETING:
The February meeting takes place on Wednesday, 15th of February 2012. This will be an extended
meeting from 16:00 to 20:00 hrs, with four talks on the Rotliegend, drinks and a buffet dinner
(sponsored by NAM) and the Annual General Meeting. To order the appropriate amount of food and
drinks, pre-registration will be required. Details will follow in the next Newsletter.
Application for membership has been received from Mara van Eck van der Sluijs (Staatstoezicht op de
Mijnen) Pieter Gerritsen (GDFSUEZ), Michel Hamers (Chevron), Michiel Harings (EBN), Pieter van den
Heuvel (PanTerra), Ivar de Josselin de Jong (Fugro), David Kneen (PanTerra), Donata Liuzzi (Horizon),
Rossi Carolina Mendez Cordero (TNO), Karen Oud (Fugro), Erik Sens (DataCo), Xiaoxi Wang (Delft
University). If no objections are received prior to or during the next meeting, they will be admitted as
members of our society.
Based on the feedback we received we think the Christmas dinner was a great success. Unfortunately, a
number of people who had registered stayed away without cancellation. We therefore paid for those
meals, which is a waste of resources that could have been put to better use.
The membership fee for 2012 is still €15. Please renew your membership by transferring € 15 to
the following bank account: 220.127.116.113, PGK, Den Haag
Please make sure to mention your “name” and “PGK fee 2012” in the subject line.
You might consider making this an annual automatic payment, saving yourself the effort of transferring
the money and your secretary the effort of chasing up late payments.

Salt-Induced Stress Anomalies: a new explanation for rock property variations
Guido Hoetz (EBN)
Accurate rock property prediction is often a critical success factor for wells targeting
hydrocarbons. This applies not only to reservoir porosity and permeability affecting productivity
directly, but also to acoustic velocity, seismic time-to-depth conversion and depth prognosis. A
detailed analysis of variation in the overburden rock velocity in the Southern North Sea has
shown that Triassic velocity variations of up to 18% occur within short distances (e.g. <1 km).
A correlation was found between increased acoustic velocities and the presence of an
underlying salt weld. Salt Induced Stress Anomaly (SISA), a geomechanical model, is presented
that can explain these observations and is based on the principles of pointloading and
buoyancy. In the initial state, prior to salt movement, the vertical effective rock stresses
resulting from the overburden weight are transmitted uniformly and cause laterally even
compaction in the sediments. However, once the salt layer is able to flow and redistribute itself
under the influence of buoyancy forces, the overburden stress will concentrate itself near the
salt welds. This locally increased stress gives rise to higher velocities in the overburden. The
same stress concentration model can also explain deterioration in the porosities of the
Rotliegend reservoir as observed underneath salt welds.
