Back groun ds
Th emes
From th e application s men u item "Appearan ce", customizin g Win dow Mak er becomes
quite easy.
Th emes, styles, icon set, back groun ds can be defin ed as soon as th ey are in stalled in
th e righ t place.
Usually th ey are foun d in ~/GNUstep/Library/Win dowMak er/Directory_n ame
(Directory_n ame sh ould be replaced with Th emes, Back groun ds...) or in /usr/local
/sh are/Win dowMak er/Directory_n ame.
Back gr oun ds
Back groun ds can be selected amon g solid, gradien t or images men u items. Th ey can
be accessed from th e root men u item Appearan ce/Back groun ds or can be defin ed
with in th e con fig file, th at is ~/GNUstep/Defaults/Win dowMak er.
Selectin g th e men u item run s th e supplied program wdwrite to write th e selection

Th e syn tax of th e con fig file look s lik e:
Work spaceBack = (solid, gray) or (solid, "#333340")
Th e last specifies th e color n ame in stan dard X format.
Th is allows to defin e th e default back groun d.
A back groun d can be set for every work space.
To give each work space a specific back groun d, th e syn tax is almost th e same.
Work spaceSpecificBack h as to be used in stead.
Example:
Work spaceSpecificBack = ((solid, red), (cpixmap, sh ip.jpg, gray), (), (dgradien t, red,
blue)
Th is sets th e back groun d of work space 1 to solid, of work space 2 to jpeg image
sh ip.jpg, an d of work space 4 to a gradien t. Work space 3 gets th e back groun d defin ed
by Work spaceBack .
Th ese settin gs use quite a lot of resources.
Th e solid back groun ds are stron gly recommen ded for 8bit display to reduce th e
n umber of used colours.
Six solid back groun ds colours are available by default.
Th e gradien t back groun ds are very n ice look in g but sh ould be used on 16 or 24 bit
display.
Th e images back groun d is th e place to select person al pictures as soon as th ey were
put in th e back groun ds directory above men tion ed.
Usually th e JPEG format gives th e best compromise between size an d quality. Oth er
images format can be used as soon as Win dow Mak er was compiled with th e
correspon din g libraries.
An image back groun d sh ould'n t be used on an 8bit display, especially if it is a
